Tuition Heroes tracks annual tuition levels (including required fees) for every higher education institution in America and calculates a rolling compound annual growth rate (CAGR). The CAGR provides the year-over-year growth rate of tuition over time and describes the rate at which tuition would have grown if it grew at a steady rate. If an institution’s CAGR is 2.5% or less, they are rewarded Tuition Hero status. We use 2.5% because it is a good approximation of the consumer price index (CPI), and tuition levels shouldn’t be growing faster than the CPI.
Our data goes back to 2010, and we designated the first Tuition Heroes in 2014. We just analyzed the data from the 2016-2017 school year and have awarded the Tuition Heroes for 2018. You can use the interactive chart below to see which schools made the cut.
Just change the filter criteria in each drop-down box to meet your needs and the chart will update. Then hover over or select each bubble to see which institution is represented.
Tuition Hero Score
This year we added a new metric called the Tuition Hero Score. It measures an institution’s consistency regarding their Tuition Hero status as a percentage. By showing the number of times an institution has been designated a Tuition Hero versus the number of times we’ve been awarding the designation, you can see if their tuition stability is consistent.
